After the Christmas release of the new KahelOS Desktop installers 12-25-2009, there's no stopping this citrusy fresh Linux Distribution.

Today on New Year' Day, Let us introduce to you KahelOS Light Edition 01-01-2010 designed for Netbooks with limited storage capacity.

The installer allowed me to select a UK keyboard...perfect!

The theme/ branding is still very bright. Could this be optional?

Is it possible to change the name from 'Light' to something else?

People coming from the proprietary software world may think that 'light' means they only get half of the product, or a 'trial' version.

New install looks great, but it didn't keep my keyboard setting after installation, it defaulted to en_US and didn't allow me to pick en_GB from the login screen.

@chris and everyone:

first of all thank you.

second of all, yes suggestions and recommendations are all very much welcome.

we reckon that we need to create a "suggestion box" somewhere here in the forum so that all of our suggestions are collated and noted in such a manner that it is organized.

we'll create this soon.

as for the name or description lean... we also did think of that, prior to describing it "powerpacked", the copy was supposed to be "lean and packed"

as KahelOS is an evolving distro and a fledgling at that, we will try to keep in mind all of the suggestion, improvements and enhancements and probably create a team who will eventually be doing names or descriptions and probably features/apps that we can vote on in the long run and as we progress as well.

Hi KahelOSians,
I'm an ArchLinux almost-newbie, from Italy, eeePC powered (1000H).

I'm going to try out this promising distro and I have some questions about:
1) why Xfce? (instead of LXDE or Openbox only..)
2) what about battery management, cpu\fan control, FunctioN\extra keys ?

The function keys /cpufan control /battery management are loaded as modules on booting up

Hello, I am trying to install the light edition from the HD (I have an old laptop with no CD-RW drive and unable to boot from a USB drive).

In Xubuntu I created a new partition of 1 GB at the end of the HD and copied the iso image kahel-light-desktop-010110-i686.iso to that partition. Then I set up Grub2 by adding the following entry via update-grub:

menuentry "KahelOS installer" {
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,3)
linux /boot/vmlinuz26 boot=boot root=/dev/ram1 ramdisk_size=508792 rw
initrd /boot/kahel_pata.img

This method works for Ubuntu and derivatives. For Kahel OS, the installer boots and it takes me to a menu. Whatever I do from that point on, a message pops up asking me if I want to abort the installation. When rebooting, I see an error message for a second "no space left" on the device. I guess (this is just a guess) that the image is decompressed or is trying to be installed in the 1GB partition. Maybe the problem is "root=/dev/ram1"... Should it be /dev/ram or /dev/sda1 or what... Any ideas?

In fact, I found the solution. It was so evident that I regret for having reported this problem: The method is intended for live CDs, which is not the case. The correct grub2 configuration is just:

menuentry "KahelOS installer" {
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,3)
linux /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda1 rw
initrd /boot/kahel_pata.img
}

I was able to install the system. The only issue is not Kahel-specific: after partitioning the kernel is not able to re-read the partitions and one has to reboot and re-start the installation.

On the Download page, 'Light Edition' is incorrectly written, it says 'Ligth Edition'.
