Kahel OS December 2009 (0.8-3): Focus on basic necessity and basic usable desktop.

Every Release, Kahel OS will go rennaissance, this time we will be back to basics and will focus more on basic necessity, usability, simplicity and making Kahel OS a much more effective desktop.

Here are the Changes:

Remove the list of applications that are not a necessity for almost every users.

- Remove GIMP
- Remove GNOME Office
- Remove Pessulus
- Remove Moovida
- Remove Jokosher
- Remove Pitivi
- Remove Epiphany
- Remove Beagle
- Remove Pidgin
- Remove Ekiga

Add the following applications to ensure a basic usable desktop.

- Use Firefox
- Use OpenOffice.org
- Use Empathy for IM, SIP (Audio/Video calling)
- Use Tracker

Replace the following packages for a much usable desktop.

- Replace Pidgin and Ekiga with Empathy
- Replace Epiphany with Firefox
- Replace GnomeOffice with OpenOffice.org
- Replace Beagle with Tracker

Packages that will be retained.

- Brasero CD/DVD creator
- Scanner and Printer Utility
- Basic Gnome Accessories
- Seahorse (Necessary for Gnome)
- Flash (A Necessity)
- Gstreamer Plugins (A Necessity)
- F-Spot
- Banshee

Reasons for Removal.

- GIMP is a niche application targeted only for professionals.
Most users will be happy just to use F-Spot for photo editing.
F-Spot can also upload photos to various sources including Facebook.
F-Spot promote good organization of Photos.

- Gnome Office because not all documents are supported.
OpenOffice.org can support all usable documents available today.
OpenOffice.org is a complete replacement of Microsoft Office.

- Pessulus is a standalone application that assumes Epiphany installed,
with the replacement to Firefox, most of the features of the app will
be barely usable, making the app functionality incomplete.

- Tracker is faster, smaller, and less CPU intensive than Beagle, and is
a freedesktop.org project.

- Empathy can do Instant Messaging and VoIP SIP audio and video calling.
Empathy supports all IM protocols found in Pidgin.

New applications included.

- Mabuhay Welcome Center (features a basic guided tour of the desktop)

New additions to the new version.

- Plymouth Graphical Boot
- Auto KMS on Intel, nVidia and ATI graphics chipset.
- Gnome 2.28
- PulseAudio
- LiveCD or CLI installation method
- Upgrade packages via CD

Aren't we also having the KahelOS repository up and running this December, plus the tested 64Bit Support?

I'm a GIMP guy but I agree with removing GIMP for the default install. Perhaps replacing GIMP with a much smaller, lighter image editing application would be nice. Kind of like MS Paint for Windows.

GPaint or MyPaint maybe?

Yes, the 686 and 64-bit version will be released on December, and the mirror and Kahel OS's repository will be also be released on December.

@creek32: Thanks for your suggestion, I was evaluating MyPaint myself and I like it, but we're focusing more on making the distro simple, but users can always install them via pacman or yaourt.

The next release of Kahel OS will be targeted for mainstream desktop users, giving them an alternative option to use 'a fast, simple, lightweight and rolling-release Linux desktop', lightweight enough to run on netbooks and comfortable enough for Ubuntu, Fedora and Windows users with the emphasis of being a rolling-release distro--to get the most recent and up-to-date versions available. And most importantly, it is simple, basic and straightforward, no cruft involved, only the basic necessity applications and basic usable desktop.
