hm.. i find Hal rather important for Linux if the users want a smooth experience..( for now ..)

ubuntu has a halsectomy on the depreciation of hal ..lol
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Halsectomy

seems like most of the hal's jobs are being transfered to devicekit and udev ..

though , applications that has been ported/ modified to work without hal are just the more commonly used ones...( or those that ubuntu are using...lol )

Currently , as of now , a large chunk of the linux apps depend heavily on hal ...
it might be a while more before we see any feasible changes in the linux system /software that would allow us to use Linux without hal

Well done for trying. Discussion on the 'net suggests that Hal is not great and people seem to be welcoming this shift, so i guess it is just a matter of time before Hal is made redundant.

Chris.

hm.. ic ic :)

i have been testing the hal-less idea with KCE ..:)
So far using the xorg-server-udev package from aur allowed me to boot in to GUI ..

However , stuff like PCmanFM requires hal...
Switched to emelfm2 for a file manager that doesnt need hal..lol..
hm....though.. i feel rather uncomfortable without hal ..lol

Hi, fplolz!

I'm not sure of the specifics of hal or the suggested alternatives. As you know, the UNIX > GNU/Linux philosophy is to use many small tools that are good at doing individual jobs and enable them to pass information easily between present and future applications.

(Cathedral and the Bazaar:

http://www.catb.org/~esr/writings/cathedral-bazaar/cathedral-bazaar/ )

If 'dbus , udev , devicekit-power and devicekit-disks' are all able to do small jobs well, then I can't see any reason why it couldn't potentially improve the user's experience.

Hope this adds something to the discussion.

Chris.

Hm...as of a few days ago...it was announced that ubuntu 10.04 was going to remvoe hal

i was wondering how hardware was going to be detected...
Heard that they would be using dbus , udev , devicekit-power and devicekit-disks..

but i wonder if this is it enough to ensure a smooth user expirience...

Any one has any ideas / thoughts about this? :o
