@roz, if your using any AUR drivers using 'yaourt', remove it (pacman -Rd) and install the upstream drivers (libgl, libdrm, xorg-video-..), don't forget to sync first.

pacman --sync --refresh --sysupgrade or pacman -Syu
pacman -S xorg-video-{intel,nouveau,ati} #depending on your video hardware.

Hi all (again),

Now for some additional optimization for speed geeks. By default, KahelOS is installed with /dev/shm. You might want to take advantage of this shared memory device's speed (and automatic cleanup every time you reboot).

Make sure the GUI/X is not running. Edit /etc/fstab, and add the following:

/dev/shm /tmp none rw,bind 0 0

Reboot and enjoy. Not only GDM will benefit from this but also other programs that use /tmp.

Hi all,

Additional to "The greeter application appears to be crashing. Attempting to use a different one." message, one may also encounter the following warnings:

"The X server is now disabled. Restart GDM when it is configured correctly."

"Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?"

Also in following Problem 2's solution, please be careful with the 'rm -fr' command and check the file specification before pressing the Enter key. Always do this, when dealing with 'rm -fr'.

By default, there is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, this is because hardware autodetection is done entirely by HAL, including peripherals and video cards.

You can generate a new xorg.conf file by first stopping the gdm daemon,
/etc/rc.d/gdm stop
then running
X -configure
, then move the xorg.conf.new file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

xorg.conf is at /etc/X11/xorg.conf by default.

however,if it is not there. you can make your new xorg.conf by executing this command.

X -configure

this will create xorg.conf.new that you can copy or rename it to xorg.conf then configure it inside your /etc/X11.

Hope this one works.

Hi Renan,

There are several reasons why you are receiving the gdm error message, and here are several ways to fix this problem.

Problem 1. Your /tmp might not be writable.

a. Upon bootup, press ctrl+alt+f1, then login as root.
b. Then execute 'chmod 777 -R /tmp'
c. Restart your gdm server by running '/etc/rc.d/gdm restart'

Problem 2. GDM could not start because there are files in /tmp/ from previous sessions that it try to use.

a. Upon bootup, press ctrl+alt+f1, then login as root.
b. Then execute 'rm -rf /tmp/*'
c. Restart your gdm server by running '/etc/rc.d/gdm restart'

Problem 3. GDM is trying to run some accessibility tools that you might have uninstalled or not working.

a. Upon bootup, press ctrl+alt+f1, then login as root.
b. Then execute 'nano /usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf'
c. Comment out the line GtkModulesList=... with #GtkModulesList=...
d. Restart your gdm server by running '/etc/rc.d/gdm restart'
