As you all know, the next version of Kahel OS will be due this December 2009, and the new version
focuses on simplicity, basic necessity and basic usable desktop.

To Quote:

"The next release of Kahel OS will be targeted for mainstream desktop users, giving them an alternative option to use 'a fast, simple, lightweight and rolling-release Linux desktop', lightweight enough to run on netbooks and comfortable enough for Ubuntu, Fedora and Windows users with the emphasis of being a rolling-release distro--to get the most recent and up-to-date versions available. And most importantly, it is simple, basic and straightforward, no cruft involved, only the basic necessity applications and basic usable desktop."

This thread aims to gather community feedbacks and as we release our beta installer, we hope that we can also gather beta tests feedbacks, I hope that everyone should participate.

Being simple and basic, we also hope to achieve beauty, after all, beauty is nature's way of expressing love in many ways, big or small. We all want things to be beautiful, but we also want reliability, security, solid and robust system.

We want to achieve all that in our next release, so I hope you suggest what would you like to see in the next Kahel OS.

So here are the most pressing issues I have encountered with the development with the new OS.

1. Graphical boot splash, because not all video chipsets will get one, only Intel, nVidia, and ATI.

2. Compiz by default? This really needs your cooperation, so we can test out if Compiz will work upon installation.

3. Next-gen Filesystems, namely BTRFS & NILFS2. We saw how those filesystem performed in the previous Kahel OS, we have no problems using NILFS2 because the Arch repository have it included upon update, but BTRFS is in AUR and that is another story. We hope that when the repository is up, we can help people using the BTRFS filesystem. BTRFS currently is marked as a preview filesystem, aims to help researchers, developers, technology enthusiasts and benchmarkers.

4. CD or DVD? Size does matters, so thus our changes in the system. We want people to use and install Kahel OS fast, thus we want to make it really small so it's faster to download, but we want to use Asian fonts, we want to include OpenOffice.org. How are we going to deal with these pressing issues?

5. Fonts, font's are not small, they are huge, we have included some very usable and beautiful fonts by default install, but we also want to include Asian fonts, so we can support Asian texts, due to the size limitation of the CD, what can be done?

6. Live CD Installation, this really needs to be done, there is a lot of people requesting this feature. We have created a LiveCD in the previous version, now we want to move forward towards LiveCD installation, of course we also want to have an Alternative installation, but we don't want separation of the installation methods into 2 separate CD's.

Feel free to discuss with us, your comments, suggestions and feedbacks are really valuable on the development of the next Kahel OS.
