Ok let us close this issue now. Enough has been spewed.

1. We do like suggestions and commentaries but please do so in the right and in a nice way.
2. Know and understand what you really want first before asking for it. If you understood it, don't complain unnecessarily with the difficulty or ugliness.
3. Read thoroughly before posting or replying.

@bornagainpenguin:

Maybe we could help you, but first don't get it wrong way (again). You won't learn the internals any easier in the GUI. You should be ready to get exposed more on the shell if you want that.

One of our core principle is that we should empower people by making them realize they can do it, not by doing it for them. This is also why you were met with resistance. Yes, we attack bad attitudes and principles but we still love you (ahem, as a person). That sounded gay.

I'm thankful, very thankful indeed, if I misunderstood you on your first post. But you did posted wrong :-) Let's get over that ok. Open up another thread and let's share our minds.

@bornagainpenguin

Compiz have been removed completely in place of Metacity compositor, if a user prefer compiz, just install the fusion-icon, ccsm and emerald packages.

The new installer has KMS and plymouth installed by default for ATI, nVidia and Intel graphics cards, so enabling compiz should be hassle free.

Due to unstability of Gnome PackageKit, it had been replaced by GtkPacman, which is very similar to Synaptics Package Manager, and with a very intuitive and simple UI, it should not be intimidating to use for new users.

For Netbooks installation, the standard complete install size is 2.2 Gb, which gives you approx ~2Gb free space if your using a 4GB model. You can however removed the fonts that you don't use and openoffice in place of a much lighter alternatives, and localepurge is easy to install via yaourt, if you need to remove some locales.

Thanks for some of your insights. While I agree with some of them, the first suggestion doesn't seems to sound right, since doing so is counter-intuitive and would break some applications, and second, honestly I'm somewhat offended that it sounds like your disregarding all the work done on Kahel OS and that it is nothing more than a mask than a complete Linux open source economy in general targeting users with such needs and preferences.

I like to cite the motivations of Kahel OS to give the users what Kahel OS is all about.

This is not the first time I have been involved with creating a Linux distro, When I was in college back in 2006-2007, I made a custom Ubuntu & Debian distro with so much niche' features like Live Chat Support right into the desktop with automated registrations to Freenode.org, a Welcome Center, First-Time Run Wizard, Cleanup and Defaults, Internet Accounts Wizard.. so many wizards all packed into that 1 single CD, it is really amazing..

But I learned a lot of disadvantages and how it affect the open source community as a whole. fplolz and I were discussing just recently in the irc about this.

I realized that a real Linux distro should be able to go with the current mainstream flow, like controlling the flow of a river, or a waterfall, and still maintaining a beautiful landscape... The difference is most major Linux distro's today are caging the entire ecosystem for themselves.

And they have a lot of patches, a lot of new applications, wizards, like my old distro project, but it is only designed for Ubuntu's/Fedora's/SuSE's/Mandriva's/etc, but for Linux's, BSD's, Slack's or the whole open source economy in general, it is useless.

I understand that niche is important but what's more important is a niche in a way that it's generally usable across all system.

Kahel OS is made in a way that it is intended to be much closer to mainstream, vanilla as possible, but with niche features and applications that we will continually develop and make available for systems to build with.

That is what Kahel OS is all about, it's a vision of an ideal OS, natural and simple, with a decentralized flow of innovation, open source, continually changing, and never stopping.. Giving power to the people. That's what a true open source economy is all about.

I think perhaps the other posters misunderstood my previous post.

I like Kahel, and I think it works quite well. It certainly works better for a new user than trying to install plain ArchLinux for the first time! I was able to get the OS installed and boot up to a desktop with a minimum of fuss and have all my hardware detected properly from the start. That is a real good thing!

I would one day like to learn about the internals of Kahel (and ArchLinux) but I prefer to do so from within a GUI environment, where I can easily access the documentation online and google for solutions to any issues that may come up. When I made my comments about this being 2009, I was referring to how difficult it can be to get ArchLinux installed when working from a command line and having to run from room to room to see what the documentation says I should do next on the other computer. Kahel frees me from having to do this, and that again is a real good thing!

However once the System is installed I'd like to be able to use the ArchLinux underpinnings if I may. Just like If I installed Ubuntu or if I installed Mepis I could remove some packages and themes and be back to running Debian again if I choose. This is the easy button. This is what makes it possible to start learning how to configure an operating system for me. Yes it s the hard way and I have to do things over and over again until I get it right--but I learn best this way.

That was the only reason I asked about if you could make it possible to revert back to ArchLinux on install. To me this would be a feature, something good. And you did ask for suggestions about what the users would like to see. I thought to myself "Hey I'm a user! I installed Kahel yesterday to try it out" and posted my thoughts. Was I wrong to do so? I thought you were looking for feedback!

As for the compiz situation, I know you guys knew about it--I found the solution in your forums, remember? But I wouldn't have been able to fix it without booting off my Ubuntu USB key, because I wouldn't have known there was a solution. And I was unable to get a virtual terminal to work for me when the white screen happened. I was lost and had no idea what to do to make the system work for me. All I was saying in my original post is this ug needs to be a priority because even though I was able to work my way around the issue, the average person who is new to Linux would have given up and never known there was an answer to the problem, or even what the problem was!

That's the only reason I brought up the compiz issue.

Also I don't understand where I came off sounding "like an almighty person" when the topic asked for what my suggestions and feedback were! You ASKED me for what my thoughts were. Now I'm a bad person for saying what I think should be worked on???

And again I don't see how I am contradicting myself. Or why you seem to think I am an elitist or a newbie. I have been trying out Linux since around 1998\99 starting with SuSE Linux 4.x and then again with Fedora, Xandros, Linspire, and Ubuntu. It was with Fedora and Ubuntu I was finally able to learn enough about how to work in Linux well enough to do my every day tasks and that I preferred Gnome over KDE. I am still learning but I do know some things!

Also I am not against paying for software--as you can see I listed Xandros and Linspire, and the old SuSE Linux, which I used to buy in the big box with a nice printed manual to help me learn the system. I am not a freeloader if that is what you were trying to insinuate! I don't even know why it would come up in the first place...

And "astroturfer" do you even know what that word means? It means someone who works for competitor's product who spreads lies about their product to make their boss' product look better. How the heck does that term apply to me?

Finally I thank you for saying you'll look into Straw for me, but I'm not sure if I even want to be a part of this community any more. Your remarks really bother me. You were the ones who asked for suggestions and now you want to attack me for offering some!

--bornagainpenguin

PS: Hopefully I've typed enough response you can see I am not any of what I was accused of being.

Kahel OS is not for the lazy and ignorant. Have you read this (http://kahelos.org/benefits.php)? Please read first and take it to heart before posting any further.

You are thankful you were able to fix the white screen problem? You booted the Ubuntu from usb then fixed it (lol)... Didn't you know you can use CTRL+ALT+F1 for virtual terminals?

Why'd you choose Linux? If you don't feel like fiddling with stuff from the console, then I suggest use Windows instead of Linux. That will make your life so easy =)

also we would very much appreciate it if you would first introduce yourself and provide us some background on how we can make things work better for you..

Thank You

@netblog
thats good news ...hm...for the usb issue...the Linux kernel has certian modules used for usb syncing
hm...you could try disabling this modules (!rndis_host !rndis_wlan !cdc)
by placing them in your rc.conf modules along with the exclaimation mark to blacklist it..
try it out :)

bornagainpenguin:

Wow :-) I hope you don't take this the wrong way...

Thanks for your input. They are issues that were already discussed and agreed to be addressed. But all I can say right now is that Kahel is not for you. As have been pointed out explicitly and implicitly, Kahel is __stable__ __enough__ for people who are intellectual lazy but not lazy perse. A lot of what you've said is plainly incorrect or doesn't touch the real issue/problem. A lot of what you've said are also hurtful (not that they care) and inconsiderate (this one you should pay attention to) to the persons who are doing you these services without any compensation.

And speaking Linux, you sound like a hypocrite and contradict yourself a great deal. I don't really know how to place you if you think yourself an elitist (in which you're making it hard for yourself) or an overbearing newbie (in which you're just trying to sound cool without making your research first).

I hope it's not your intention but you also sound like an almighty person who can just order people around and one who needs to impressed and pampered. Post one at the kernel thread, I'm sure you'll flamed to a crisp, extra-crispy and extra-spicy. Please learn how to ask nicely.

We do try to make it easy for the regular users but we don't want to foster the attitudes you've just shown in our community.

PS. I'll personally make sure to make Straw Feed Reader works, especially for you.. But considering your tone, how much are you willing shell out? I'm both kidding and dead serious. I hope you've got the message between the lines. You're doing born agains and penguins a disservice. Hehe.. I hope you're not just another astroturfer and hear again from you. If you'd just improve your tone, we can also be best of friends.

In all honesty? Make it easy to install Kahel, and then revert it back to ArchLinux once installed.

I like the idea of ArchLinux but find it too troublesome to install it on my eeepc 901 myself. I know it is important to know how the system works from the ground up, but most of the time I don't feel like fiddling with stuff from the console, I'd rather get the system up and running in GUI (with Gnome as my preferred desktop) and THEN I'll fiddle with the settings. Having to spend hours on my limited internet connection is for the birds--this isn't 1990 anymore, we can do much of this stuff automatically now and then go back to optimize the system after it is installed.

There's no reason to subject myself to this unnecessarily, and I appreciate that Kahel allows me to get a working Gnome desktop up and running in under thirty minutes without the hassle.

I just wish there was a way to make it ArchLinux again after I install it.

Secondly, you guys need to remove the automatic Compiz start that is in the current version. This causes the desktop to become a white screen without any elements to disable the malfunctioning Compiz. Thankfully I was able to boot Ubuntu on a USB key and read the forums so I could fix the situation. The type of users you seem to be targeting will probably be unable to do this though--theyll simply shrug and decide Kahel (and by extension ArchLinux) is broken and reinstall Windows.

Finally as mentioned I am on a netbook. Most of those have limited hard disk space, so please make it easier to run through the system and remove applications and localizations once the system is installed. Also make it easier to add and remove applications in a Synaptic type package manager, not this add-n-remove type application you currently are using.

Thanks for your time!

--bornagainpenguin

PS: Make sure Straw Feed Reader works. It's my favorite OFFLINE capable feed reader that loads both pictures and text, making it the best feed reader I've ever used and the only one on Linux capable of doing so. Make it work please!

@skewty: The propriety nVidia drivers is always available for download in the main repositories, while the catalyst drivers for radeon is available through yaourt.

However all of the exciting development that's happening in the graphics arena (KMS, Gallium3D, GEM, UXA, DRI2) takes place only on the open source drivers and will continue to improve, add more features and probably will make the proprietary drivers beg for it's features and rendering them obsolete due to the fact that those drivers does not have the development continuity to improve.

I think the incompatibilities of these drivers is a good feature, provided that they have an open source alternative. Having Xorg and even the Linux kernel not to support those proprietary drivers means only innovation and improvement.

The answer is very simple, it works or it doesn't work, if it doesn't work then use the open source drivers.

there is a work around to this ..
but its most like you would have to boot into ro 3 ..or init level 3
if xorg 7.5 cannot work with your graphic card ..( can you still see proper display in xorg 7.5)

you could get previous packages of the older xorgs version from the arch rollback machine
http://arm.kh.nu/search/index.php?a=32&q=xorg&core=1&extra=1&community=1

@joelbryan: But I don't want xorg 7.5. I need to use 7.3 or previous. The legacy GeForce and Radeon drivers don't work with xorg >= 7.4.

Will I be able to install this new version of Kahel OS with xorg 7.3?

I currently support a few ubuntu 8.04 pcs and am looking to move them to a rolling release distribution. My problem is that both require legacy drivers to run accelerated 3d. Will I have the option to install xorg 7.3 and pin it to that version so that future updates don't kill their video performance (they both run compiz)?

This is a deal breaker for me.

@roz, if your using any AUR drivers using 'yaourt', remove it (pacman -Rd) and install the upstream drivers (libgl, libdrm, xorg-video-..), don't forget to sync first.

pacman --sync --refresh --sysupgrade or pacman -Syu
pacman -S xorg-video-{intel,nouveau,ati} #depending on your video hardware.

On Kahel OS near completion, GDM starts now with 100% dbus, no more HAL & xorg.conf results to faster bootup, everything now is daemon activated as "per needed" basis, so no waste of precious resources on not needed and called cpu cycles.

Also, hibernate and suspend now works, will incorporate the one true Linux way on doing hibernate, using a SWAP partition with $((SWAP+PHYSICALMEM)) size. Hence on new memory upgrades, you can always do mkswap.

The installer will be released ASAP, target date will still be this month.

Update: Internationalization, i18n, SCIM, easier language selection upon setup, improved braille support!

Kahel OS welcomes the world with full i18n support!! Dahil maraming tao ang ikatutuwa na makita ang sarili nilang linguwahe maliban sa ingles! (Because many people want to see their own language aside from english).

We have also included SCIM inputs and their engines, so people can now use their natural born language via keyboard.

Since we have developed Kahel OS, we never removed any accessibility features to support all people that require this feature, so with our new Kahel OS version, we have included braille fonts to improve accessibility for the blind.

Life is Good!
