hi everyone..

recently just made a new iso based of kahel with archiso-live livebackup profile

glad to say , the iso was built without a hitch
Booting the iso was also painless..

However , after logging into the system , the terminal wouldnt work
for example , a terminal would usually display
20:44 samuel ~ $
However , upon launching the terminal ,
i got a blank terminal

and when starting gparted from the icon ,
i got a error saying
unable to fork a new proccess..

i was able to log in as root

does any 1 have any idea how to fix this?

fplolz on "Kahel Community Edition Live CD 2.X development"

Yes , i have started on the 2.X development of Kahel OS

In This development , It will fork into two different ways
one using the archiso-live installer
and the other using the Larchin 7 installer

the reason is that each installer has different requisites/ dependencies ...
So as to not mix up the dependencies and create a bloated distrolet , i have decided to for it out into two separate projects :)

Notes : I would like to express my gratitude to Godane for the archiso-live installer ( though i have never conversed with him... one of this days i will try and discuss this to him )

so...Crossing my fingers for the installer to work :)

Oh yes , in this 2.X dev ,
Shaman 1 will be replaced by gtkpacman as shaman 1 is broken
and shaman2 is still somewhat in alpha and requires kdelibs...

Um..another thing , i have decided . Instead of posting the development and releases of Kahel Community edition in this forum , i will be updating the updates / releases over at my site ..
so as to not spam the forums...>.<
Hm...currently , my site is just a place holder ...with no news in it...
i will update it as soon as i got some time..
my site is at :

lol ...sorry guys for the late notice in the gvfs bug that caused the whole darnned installer to fail to work

So , in essence , this release , Kahel Community Edition Live CD 1.1, is a bug fix release

The applications that can be found are really similiar to that of the 1.0 release :)

Heres a laydown of what to expect...
It is a live cd and will boot directly into a nice GUI :)
It is built using Larch 5 scripts ..therefore , KCE live CD in theory can be also booted from
USB..:)
It is rather lightweight...taking about only 80 mb ram on boot up

Previously , ( in the beta release ) It had the following key applications
LXDM (LXDE's display manager)
LXDE
E17
Shaman ( pacman gui frontend
Arora ( webkit based Internet browser )
Xsane
Pcmanfm ( file manager)
Leafpad ( Light text editor)
Brasero ( CD/dvd writer )
Pidgin ( A IM client)
A small handful of tools ( tools that configure moniter resolution , the locale , keyboard layout and users )

In This final release , It contains all previously added applications and added a few more :D
VLC player
Exaile music player
Ted text editor ( it is MS doc compatible )
Mobile Media Converter ( an easy to use Video Converter )
Gnormalize ( Audio file converter )
MyPaint ( a graphic/image editor :) )
Sylpheed ( A email client )
Xchat ( An irc client )

And for the technically inqusitive ...
here is the list of packages installed
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3789720/packagelistFinal

To use the live cd ,
Username liveuser
password live

To install Kahel community Edition , click on the install icon in the menus :)It shouldnt be to hard to miss it...It is a nice gui installer :)

If in any case the installers fails to start ...type
sudo python /opt/larchin/run/larchin.py

So...please do give Kahel Community Edition Live CD a try :)
here is the link

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3789720/KahelCELiveCD1-1.iso

i am hoping to get mirrors soon...

Announcements ...:)
As i am currently the only 'dev' for KahelCommunityEdition L...I am greatly in need of help..
Even if you cant spare the time to help ...just contribute your idea :) It will come a long way in helping the development...
And also , i am really hoping to get a small section at the corner of the KahelOS site for the Community Edition Live CD ....:x ..hope its not too much to ask...:)

Thats all for today :) ..I doubt there is a need for anymore bug fixes..( as i did not notice any system instability /malfunctioning anymore ..) unless someone finds a bug .. i will gladly fix it :)

The next release ...would probably be somewhere near December....Probably before Christmas :D

Yep...Feel free to ask any questions if needed about the KCE live CD 1.1 :)

Cheers

Hello every one :) ( hope you arent tired of me yet...)

After days of toiling and several cups of coffee ...The Kahel Community Edition Live CD is finally Released ! :D

Heres a laydown of what to expect...
It is a live cd and will boot directly into a nice GUI :)
It is rather lightweight...taking about only 80 mb ram on boot up
This release contains a working installer ( unlike previous releases ...)
Its a Beta release....( Yes , even though its a beta , it is stable enough for daily use )
In Beta , the main issue i was tackling were stability and usability...
Therefore , some of the intended applications have yet to be added.

For starters...:)
By Default , Kahel Community Edition Live CD comes with 2 window managers
LXDE ( LXDE has came a long way and its really much of a DE rather than just a WM but still remains really light and sleek :) )
Enlightenment 17 ( A nice and shiny window manager :D ...Rather light on system resources considering all the eye-candy it provides :) )

I have included LXDM ( Yes :D LXDE's own display manager :D )
and LXDM is the default Display manager for Kahel Community Edition
LXDM is light , sleek and the usage of it is rather intuitive :D

In Enlightenment , you will notice there is no networkmanager applet ....or any other applets for that matter ...This is so as by default , Enlightenment does not have a systray .Fortunately , Networkmanager is still running the background...so there will be Internet connectivity :)

However , this can be easily modified to suit your needs. If you ever need a systray , enable the systray from Enlightenments modules and gadgets :) They provide a wide variety of nice gadgets :)

To install Kahel community Edition , click on the install icon in the menus :)It shouldnt be to hard to miss it...It is a nice gui installer :)
If in any case the installers fails to start ...type
sudo python /opt/larchin/run/larchin.py

Yep ^^ ...Few Reasons why i am really unwilling to move to the new larch 7 installer is cause of the new dependencies needed...like pyqt ..Therefore taking more space than actually needed...Plus larch 7 is not ready yet..

To use the live cd ,
Username liveuser
password live

Applications added :
Arora ( Its a light webbrowser based on webkit engine and using QT ... Please dont freak out people.. Firefox is good ...but rather bloated and heavy ...couldnt get it to fit into the iso size limit ...)
Pdigin ( A nice IM manager that supports quite a number of protocols :) )
Shaman ( A front end gui for pacman ..GtkPacman is really sub-par compared to this...For those of you who have used Synaptics , you would feel home with Shaman :) Shaman uses QT ...Dont worry Fans of gtkpacman...gtkpacman is still installed by default..)
Brasero ( yes ...a wonderful CD/DVD burner...)
Xsane ( still included ...)
A small handful of tools ( tools that configure moniter resolution , the locale , keyboard layout and users )
Leafpad ( A light text editor :) )
PcmanFM ( A nice sweet file manager )

yep :)
Announcements ...:)
As i am currently the only 'dev' for KahelCommunityEdition L...I am greatly in need of help..
Even if you cant spare the time to help ...just contribute your idea :) It will come a long way in helping the development...

Finally , its stable to enough to be in beta..:)
The Kahel Community Edidtion promises to be a lean and mean system...( with a few exceptions...;) )

There is one big change from alpha to beta :)
The installer is working :D at least it does for me :)
It works both partition manually or automatically...
only cfdisk is included ...
I would be really greatful if apeople could test it out /uses it :)

It is a live cd :) booting directly into a nice shiny GUI :)

Hi guys and gals :D
Remember my post a week back ? :)
http://forum.kahelos.org/topic/kahel-community-respinsd

yess..a community edition is finally produced..
But please be reminded ...THIS IS PURELY ALPHA QUALITY SOFTWARE...
It will screw your hamsters ...

Its a live cd :) and will boot into a graphical display..

Lets just say ...alot of things have been modded ...
A few key changes :) ...( well..changes that i can remember...lol )
Using LXDM instead of GDM
Providing LXDE and enlightenment 17 instead of gnome
Open office not included...( sad...couldnt get it to fit into the iso size...)
Memory usage of roughly 70 mb in graphical :) ..hehehe..lol ( very lightweight :) )
Using inittab to start LXDM instead of daemon...
Using Gamin instead of fam ..( one less daemon to start..)
Shaman included :D ..one of my favourite frontends to pacman..

A few setbacks...
trying to get iso to fit into cd
trying to get the darn installer to work...
trying to get enlightenment to play nice ...:) it was fun doing this bit..
Fixing a few dbus issues..

What works ...
Almost everything :)
still using network manager...so network should be pretty painless..
Hal is there for the devices :)

What does not...
ONLY the darn installer...( dang.....T.T )
It didnt work for me ...but it might work for you :)
Its the Larch 7 python installer
Just incase the menu link doesnt work..
try
sudo python /opt/larchin/larchin.py
or
sudo python /opt/apps/larchin/larchin.py
( my memory is failing me here...)
To get gparted...
in terminal...type sudo gparted :)

Username: liveuser
Password : live
no spaces no capitals :)
Do try and tell me how it goes :)

The Link
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3789720/KahelcommunityEdition.iso

i am hoping for mirrors...lol ..:) but this is just alpha ...

Next release would be beta ..:)
When to expect it ?....Once i get the darnned installer to work...

hm..well..as with every well known distros , there are bound to be respins /customized versions of that distro..

Well... i have actually created the iso of the respin....its 1 gig in size..and the installer fails to work for me.....therefore, the release of this respin will most probably be up and done by next weekend...please keep a lookout for it :) ...it will be announced in this very forum...

Therefore ...i intend to take the opportunity to gather the input of everyone :)
Any good suggestions ?
hm.. Just a few ground ideas i had before starting on this small little project

Ideas :
Live CD ...it will boot into a graphical desktop...( havent decided the DE yet...)
Enabled Saving of live state ( provided the medium you are using is writable...like thumbdrive)
Should be fast , lean , light and work out of the box if possible...
hm...

Few changes i have already implemented:
1.Removing of Gdm from daemons and enabling GDM from inittab..( reason is that it would allow people to fix their GUI problems more easily ...by switching through init levels..)
2.Removing of telepathy /empathy and replacing it with Pidgin . ( Telepathy really has alot of dependencies....this respin intends to be lean enough to fit into a cd..)
3.Removal of Gtkpacman...And addition of shaman ..:D ..( Reason My personal favourite frontend for pacman ....hehehe.....plus ..it is really much like synaptics ...:D which is good for debian users.)
4..Replacing Fam with Gamin ..well...not really much of an issue...but its one less daemon to startup
5.Added a graphical way for you to change your key board settings...( provided your mouse works...you can change the keyboard layout ..)
6. replacing the default vnc with thightvnc ...hoping it would work..( this one might change sooner or later)

Well..not much changes...yet..:D lol

Things i have in mind yet to implement or do :
1. Get the darn installer to work
2..Slim down the iso ....rid the unwanted stuff..and find smaller alternatives to current software.
3.Get it to auto login..( yes..can be done easily...lol )
4. looking for a nice lightweight alernaitve for openoffice...( stuff i have in mind ...abiword ...gnumeric...)

Well..thats it for now...
I would like to hear all your ideas :) i will try my best to fulfill them...
